Description

Known locally as the Ballard Locks, the Hiram M. Chittenden Locks provides a link for boats traveling between the salt water of Puget Sound and the fresh waters of Lake Union and Lake Washington. Tourists and locals enjoy watching the parade of sailboats, motorboats, tugs, barges and yachts passing through, as the locks' water levels are adjusted to allow their safe passage.

Also on site are the Carl S. English, Jr. Botanical Garden featuring 1,500 varieties from around the world, the fish ladder where you can watch salmon to pass between fresh and salt water, and the Visitor Center and gift shop where you can learn more about the history of the locks.
